RE: Studio setup

Hi Dave, the first thing you need is space - the more the better - and that goes for ceiling height too. The walls should be white, cream or a light yellow for portrait work. Any other colours will introduce a colour cast if you are not really careful.
You need backgrounds - seamless paper is good - in white, grey, and black.
Reflectors and stands, clamps and power cords in abundance.
I have 4 studio monoblocs, which are fantastic to use, especially the modeling light, but you could get away with powerful speedlights with slaves to fire them all in synch.
Hope this has been helpful.

Hi Kara,

I hope all your planning is going well, sounds like the big day isn't too far away.
I can highly recommend the make up artist that I used for mine. I know she can definately come to you and I will find out if the hairdresser is mobile as well. I didn't use the hairdresser for mine because she was unavailable but was extremely happy with the make up artists (2 come along on the day).
The make up artists name is Suzy, you can contact her on 0404 189 848 or 6241 0070.
I will let her know that you may call her and she can pass on the hairdressers details to you.
(They are also around the Belconnen area so you won't have to travel far for a trial).

Let me know if you would prefer someone else or they are unavailable on the day and I will put up some more recommendations.

RE: Gear for wedding photography

Hi James,

The gear question is one that fascinates and obsesses most photographers, so I'll try and be as objective as possible. The following applies to digital or film
(some wedding photographers still shoot some or all of the wedding on film).
You need a minimum of 2 camera bodies in case one fails during the wedding. It's better to have 3 bodies, with one as a backup and 2 with different lenses and ready to go at all times.
A good system is to have a wide-angle zoom on one body, and a medium-tele zoom on the other. This way you can quickly swap cameras and keep your flow instead of stopping to change lenses. Also, you are able to photograph all the important and unrepeatable shots onto separate memory cards or rolls of film. This is another insurance policy for you.
Memory cards have been know to fail, so use 1, 2 and 4gb cards rather than massive 8 or 16gb cards. If a large card failed it could be catastrophic for you and your clients.
Fast lenses are the order of the day - a 2.8 wide-angle zoom, 2.8 mid-range tele zoom, and maybe a 1.4 standard and 1.8 short tele lens. This allows you to use very shallow depth of field and also to shoot in low light without having to resort to fill flash all the time. You will never waste money buying good quality fast lenses. They will last for decades and give you excellent results.
A powerful flash with fast recharge is important for indoor reception shots.
Pack all this into one camera bag that stays with you at all times. Always keep your memory cards or exposed film on your person at all times until you get home in the evening!
Cheers,

RE: Becoming a wedding photographer

Hi James,
There are a few different paths to becoming a wedding photographer.
A lot of people start off by photographing the weddings of family and friends.
If you do a good job of this word starts getting around and you'll be asked to do more weddings.
You could also get work - paid or not - assisting an established wedding photographer. Shooting a wedding is a hard job, and not many photographers like to go it alone.
Having an assistant is a necessity and good assistants are hard to find.
So, phone or email all the wedding photography businesses in your area and offer your services. The photographer will want to see your portfolio and it needs to be good.
Obviously you need to have excellent portraits and maybe a few still-life shots of the type of things that you would find at a wedding. Don't bother with landscapes or architectural photos though - a potential employer won't be interested in those sorts of photos.
If you are a really good photojournalist or street photographer you may have a great portfolio of portrait work. A lot of brides like this kind of people photography and might be prepared to hire you on the basis of this style of shooting and your confident personality. Confidence in yourself is very important to be successful in this business, but not arrogance.
Once you have a strong portfolio of relevant photographs you're ready to register a business name and get yourself a website.
Then the fun of advertising begins. These days most brides look for their wedding photographers on-line, so a good website is essential. You also need to get listings with as many wedding advertising sites as you can afford.
I would say that word of mouth and high Google rankings are the best advertising for today's market.
Be patient - it can take a long time to generate bookings for your services, so you'll probably need to keep your day job for a while as you establish yourself and build a client base.
Good luck!

Hi Kaz,

Lennox Gardens are considered National Land so you will need to contact National Capital Authority on 6272 2901 or visit the website via the link I posted. They will be able to tell you how to get the gates unlocked and whether it is booked on your ideal date. It is a very simple process and you only pay for erecting structures (see the website for what classes as a structure) or a refundable deposit for keys to gates or power outlets.

RE: Need help with ideas or planning your wedding?

Hi Jamie,

My pleasure, I hope it helped. I am more than happy to give you hints/help on each subject as it arises.

In regards to who pays for what for your bridesmaids, you might want to read a previous response on page 3 of this thread. Another bride had the same question and you will see although I gave advice on what is normally done, it really comes down to your choice and who can afford what.

You can also check out Page 2 for some tips on saving with flowers.
Scarlett recently mentioned that a Bride they had photographed brought her bouquets from the Belconnen markets and not only were they gorgeous but a fantastic price as well.
The biggest tip is to shop around and try buy flowers in season and in stock. If they are not in season or the florist does not stock them you can pay more for this.

Angela

Hi Angela,
thanks for all that info, and I will probably ask some more stuff down the track.
One question I have now is do I pay for the bridesmaids outfits, or do they pay? what's the general rule here? and I would like to know how to save on flowers if you have any ideas.
Thanks,
Jamie

Planning a Wedding on National Land

If you are planning on an outdoor wedding, it is quite possible the place you are interested in is considered National land.
Attached is a link for further information on what locations are classified as National Land and how to book.
