I was wondering about what people should wear to portrait sessions. I'll be doing some actor auditions soon and I want to get some portfolio photos taken. I think it'd be good if you could post an article about portrait sessions, what people should wear to them and so on. It'd be really helpful for me. :)

Hi,
I was wondering if you could write something about the benefits of hiring a professional photographer to photograph a wedding. We've recently announced our engagement and a few friends and colleagues have offered to photograph our wedding for free because photography's their hobby. Other people have been telling us not to even consider it because they've heard some horror stories. I wonder if you could write an article about the risks involved and about the benefits we get when we pay for a pro. It would be good to be able to weigh things up for ourselves.
Thanks,
Katie:)

Hi Katie,
Do you know what?...I've actually been wondering about this myself recently. A few weeks ago a bride cancelled the appointment she'd made with us to discuss her wedding photography because a friend offered to do it for her for nothing and she's on a really tight budget. My heart sank when she told me - not because of the lost business, although we certainly care about our business - but because of the huge risk she's taking without really understanding the size of that risk. She's getting married at a venue which has extremely challenging lighting conditions and, if I were getting married at that venue, I'd never consider relying on an amateur photographer. The chances of getting a good result are way too low. But she doesn't know that and she's made her decision without knowing anything about the risks she's taken on. I've been wondering whether an article about all the hidden things you get when you hire a pro photographer might be warranted. There are lots of things we do that people are mostly unaware of. Take file security, for instance. We follow complicated procedures to protect client files (digital negatives) and we've invested a lot of money in the technology that allows us to do that. You don't get any of that security when you engage an amateur, and it matters.
Anyway, I'd be happy to write an article about this issue and I think it's a terrific suggestion. I'll try to spell out all the issues so you can make an informed, objective decision.
